…ctacle of the gala often overshadows the related exhibition that begins on the first Monday in May. Among them, “Savage Beauty” which featured the autumn/winter 1995–1996 Alexander McQueen collection called “Highland Rape,” stands out the most for me. McQueen said it referred to “England’s rape of Scotland,” and the exhibit taught me about the designer’s feelings for his homeland and its troubled history. At the time, it was also the closest I had ever been to a proper runway show.
